many know the term "abomination of desolation,"but almost none know what it means. complicating this, misguided, deceived "prophecy watchers"the world over are also ignorant of what daniel called "the abomination that makes desolate."they neither understand what this is nor the prophetic implications it carries.what is this "abomination"? has it already come?—or is it yet to appear? how will weknow it when we see it? the confusion surrounding this prophecy willsoon be stripped away—but only if you follow god's clues with an open mind. this prophecyis both fascinating and chilling! what it is—all that turns on its fulfillment—theall-important signal it sends to god's people—and what it heralds will follow upon its appearance—makeunderstanding this subject of supreme importance.

brace for shocking facts. you must comprehend! the world to come. the restored church ofgod presents david c. pack. author of 80 books and booklets. editor-in-chief of the realtruth magazine. read by countless and growing numbers in every nation and territory of theworld. in a violent age full of war, famine, pollution, disease, disasters and economicuncertainty, and ever-worsening bad news. answering life's greatest questions straightfrom the bible, and announcing the wonderful good news of the world to come. and now, davidc. pack. millions are growing deeply concerned aboutthe middle east, the region foretold millennia ago to lie at the center of the very biggestand worst events ever to occur on earth! while

some bible students seem to sense at leastthis much, they do not know in any detail what these events are, or why they will come.most who write about the bible do not realize this book interprets itself, that if a symbolis used in a prophecy—and most prophecies involve symbols—the author—god!—wouldnot leave the most crucial questions, those involving all humanity, subject to human interpretation.he would provide clues—necessary vital keys!—to understanding the large portions of his worddevoted to future events. he would also make known that he is the author of the bible.and he would make absolutely clear that the bible is a book backed by his authority—thatit is his divinely revealed instruction book—and that this need not merely be "accepted onfaith."

god would provide proof of all the thingshe says! the bible commands its readers: "prove allthings; hold fast that which is good." some translations say "right." this certainly appliesto prophecy. you will find that what is covered can be proven—that it is not just opinionfrom one more ill-informed, self-appointed "expert."tragically, most who read the bible remain in near total ignorance of its meaning onalmost all subjects. they do not grasp the speed, sequence, seriousness—and magnitude!—ofonrushing prophecies. so many just cannot untangle what happens when, as well as whereand to whom—and why. this broadcast explains what god says about the coming abominationof desolation.

you will see that the abomination that makesdesolate has two aspects or applications. one is primary, the other secondary. get thisclear before continuing! the prophecy first appears in daniel 8. let'sread from chapter 12: "from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, andthe abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred andninety days." covered in other broadcasts, the abomination appears 1,290 days beforejesus returns. the first clue that jesus gave about thisabomination comes from luke: "when you shall see jerusalem compassed with armies, thenknow that the desolation thereof [of jerusalem] is [near]. then let them which are in judeaflee to the mountains." god's people are told

to flee the city at this point.when the verse describes the city being surrounded, it says desolation is "near." if somethingis near, it has not happened yet. the armies desolation of jerusalem in fact comes 30 dayslater. this will become clear. matthew's account reveals the primary eventto look for: "when you therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of bydaniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso reads let him understand:) [noticeagain] then let them which be in judea flee into the mountains."matthew 24 approaches the subject from a different perspective than luke 21, which describedarmies gathering. but luke and matthew both speak of god's people—who are watching forthese two things—and fleeing when they happen!

we have so far clarified two points: (1) armiesaround jerusalem precede its desolation, but (2) this prophecy primarily involves somethingless obvious, but worse—an abomination "stand[ing] in the holy place," desolating it.keep this simple. do not allow mixed up theories, suppositions and assumptions you might haveheard to cloud the plain understanding of what god reveals.notice another aspect of the prophecy. in both matthew and mark, the instruction "...whosoreads, let him understand..." is found. counting daniel, god inspires this to be recorded threetimes for emphasis. accept this for what it means. god wants youto understand. ignore the ridiculous claims of those who say prophecy is sealed—andthat, while god would inspire many prophecies,

he does not want them understood. god doeswant his servants to comprehend—to grasp—them! mark 13 removes all doubt about the abominationstanding in the holy place—and whether it should be there: "when you shall see the abominationof desolation...standing where it ought not [in the "holy place"], (let him that readsunderstand)..." clearly, the abomination is something that does not belong where it is—inthe holy place. also note that mark adds the identical phrase, "then let them that be injudea flee to the mountains." now, what exactly is this holy place? thecontext makes plain that it is not figurative, but refers to a literal place—a religioussite. recognize, however, that this place cannot be a pagan religious site. it mustbe a location god considers, or once considered,

holy, with something foreign and blasphemousplaced there. history and other scriptures outside the gospels reveal this must be anat least partially rebuilt temple in jerusalem. the parallel appearance of both aspects ofthe abomination are the signals for god's people to flee. this makes understanding theprophecy much more crucial. what happens after the fleeing is in luke'saccount. first, again: "then let them which are in judea flee to the mountains; and letthem which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries[or the country] enter thereinto. [what happens next?] for these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written [by the prophets] may be fulfilled. but woe unto themthat are with child, and to them that give

suck, in those days! for there shall be greatdistress in the land, and wrath upon this people [that's all the modern nations descendedfrom jacob]. and they shall fall by the edge of the sword [in war], and shall be led awaycaptive into all nations: and [now get this!] jerusalem shall be trodden down of the gentiles, until the times of the gentiles be fulfilled." the book of revelation offers a parallel descriptionof what happens to jerusalem. the context comes directly off a reference to the "templeof god" being "measured." what follows the measuring? let's read: "...thegentiles: and the holy city [jerusalem] shall they [the gentiles] tread under foot fortyand two months." the next verse continues by introducing the work of the two witnessesfor the same 42 months (or 3 and 1/2 years)—with

1,260 days being the phrase in revelationdescribing the length of their commission. it should be obvious this revelation 11 "treading"by the "gentiles" refers to the length of time that jerusalem is being "trodden downof the gentiles," as luke put it. now, 1,260 days before christ returns would be 30 daysafter armies surround jerusalem. it does need to be at least briefly stated, however, that the "temple" being measured in revelation 11 is not whatever the jewsbuild. it is speaking of the new testament church (or body of christ), often referredto by the apostle paul and the apostle peter as the "temple of the lord." these versesbring proof of how god's church and the (spiritual) temple of the lord are synonymous in the newtestament.

the seriousness of the events and time periodsfollowing the setting up of the abomination brings a new level of gravity to graspingthis prophecy. all who care to escape what is coming—to flee at the right moment withgod's people—must know exactly what to watch for. but we have still not explained whatthe abomination is. now for another clue. in other broadcastsi have covered the biblical principle of duality in prophecy—that of a former and latterfulfillment of a prophecy. god often gives a first or former type to help us understandthe second or latter fulfillment. the first is not the primary fulfillment. it only pointsto the second one, which is the main focus and purpose of the prophecy.this duality is seen with the abomination

of desolation prophecy. and what it revealsis fascinating! let's examine the historical type of what has already occurred—the firstfulfillment. this is in daniel 11, the bible's single longest prophecy.for our purposes here, realize that in about 176 bc, antiochus iv acquired the kingdomfrom his older brother. antiochus was the king of the north of daniel 11, and a typeof the future final civil ruler who embodies the beast, a coming european, church/stateunion and system. antiochus epiphanes then removed the high priest in jerusalem and installedsomeone loyal to himself. upon a triumphant return from egypt, in 168 bc, antiochus sackedthe temple at jerusalem and took its golden vessels.he also sent troops to judea in 167 bc. they

destroyed the temple and its sanctuary. thisstopped the commanded twice daily sacrifices there. (exodus 29 and numbers 28 outline them.)this was an overt attempt to wipe out the jewish religion. antiochus also completelydestroyed the city of jerusalem. this military leader stationed a garrisonatop the jewish temple mount, desecrating it. daniel wrote this in chapter 8 verse 11:"yes, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him [antiochus] the dailysacrifice was taken away, and the place of [the] sanctuary was cast down." daniel addsthis in chapter 11: "and arms shall stand on his [that's antiochus'] part, and theyshall pollute the sanctuary of strength [the temple], and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that

makes desolate."now then, what exactly is this coming "abomination" that will be set up again? the truth—bornof history—is beyond eye-opening. the world to come will continue.â in additionto the literature ordered with this program, you will receive a free one-year subscriptionto the real truth! this magazine answers the question, why so much bad news in today'sheadlines? it explains the root causes behind the bad effects and points to the good newsof the only possible solution—the soon-coming kingdom of god!â your subscription is freewith any literature order. the first fulfillment was not just antiochus'armies entering jerusalem—an early "treading it down" for three years until 165 bc—butthat those armies set up an image—a specific

idol—on the temple's altar, which defiledand made it desolate. antiochus further polluted the temple by offering swine's blood on thealtar. these historical events are an unmistakablefulfillment of the prophecy in daniel 8 and 11, and a forerunner of the end-time abominationspoken of by jesus in matthew, mark and luke. we are left to ask: what was this statue andwhere is it now? now comes fascinating knowledge. you havealmost certainly never heard it. first, history reveals that what antiochus placed in thetemple—or holy place—was a statue of zeus or jupiter olympus, the chief deity of paganhellenists of greece and macedonia. a dictionary of christian biography, literature, sects and doctrines makes this clear. the

context has to do with simon (magus), thesorcerer of acts chapter 8: "when justin martyr wrote [ad 152] his [book] apology, the sectof simonians appears to have been formidable, for he speaks four times of their founder, simon [magus]...and we need not doubt that he identified him with the simon of the [bookof] acts. he states that he was a samaritan [acts 8 makes this clear], adding that hisbirthplace was a village called gitta; he describes him as a formidable magician, andtells that he came to rome in the days of claudius caesar [ad 45], and made such animpression by his magical powers, that he was honoured as a god, a statue being erectedto him on the tiber [river], between the two bridges, bearing the inscription 'simoni deosancto.'" this means "holy god simon." also

note that simon's followers generally calledhim jupiter. we can ask: is this the very same statue placedby antiochus? following its journey through history is vital. do not miss the flow ofevents. remember, god expects they be understood! it has been well reported that many centuriesago a statue of the pagan god jupiter was found in rome. this large bronze statue wasaltered and renamed st. peter. one strong indication of this comes from the archaeologyof rome, by john parker. let's read: "by some writers it is affirmed to be no other thanthe statue of jupiter, with a new head and hands; others stating that this famous statuewas melted down by order of pope leo i in the middle of the fifth century, and recastinto this figure of st. peter, holding the

keys of heaven with one hand, whilst the otheris raised in the act of benediction in the roman manner, with the first and second fingersextended." ralph woodrow, author of babylon mystery religion, goes further: "this statue is looked upon with the most profound veneration and itsfoot has been kissed so many times that the toes are nearly worn away!"incredible! yet these are the facts from history. remember, jesus said his servants—thosewho understand god's prophecies and know what to watch for—shall "see" the abomination.this must be referring to something physically visible in the holy place.will this statue be brought back, full-circle, to jerusalem to fulfill this end-time prophecy?god, through the initial fulfillment, has

almost certainly provided the answer for thosewilling to believe his word and the plain accounts of history regarding the role ofthis image and its connection to the end-time civil ruler (called the beast), as well asa powerful religious leader (called the false prophet) who will direct that it be placed—withhimself—in jerusalem! ezekiel 28 provides a picture of the audaciousnessof the false prophet when he enters jerusalem. let's read: "the word of the lord came...saying,'son of man, say unto the prince of tyrus [that's a man, not to be confused with theking of tyrus in verse 12, who is clearly satan], thus says the lord god; because yourheart is lifted up, and you have said, 'i am a god, i sit in the seat of god, in themidst of the seas."

daniel 11:45 explains that the king of thenorth will "plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain..."of course, the dead sea and the mediterranean sea are about equidistant on either side ofjerusalem, east and west. the false prophet will obviously participate in this move andjoin this king. let's pause to summarize. a united europe—afinal revival of the holy roman empire!—will transform today's crashing global economyand usher in a time of world prosperity unlike any previous time. the false prophet willproclaim himself to be god. amazingly, billions will believe him, having been seduced by hismiracles. the world will rejoice and also worship the beast because he will bring peaceand prosperity back to a world losing it today.

verses 5 through 8 describe more of this religiousleader's pride and what his end will be: "by your great wisdom and traffick have you increasedyour riches, and your heart is lifted up because of your riches: therefore thus says the lordgod; because you have set your heart as the heart of god; behold, therefore i will bringstrangers upon you...they shall bring you down to the pit."antiochus epiphanes was a forerunning type of the false prophet and the beast becauseboth are worshipped. the ultimate fulfillment of the abominationis not just the statue, it is the final leader of the religious system—the human personificationof the babylonish whore—who enters jerusalem and says, "i am god."in fact, the entire babylonish system that

this false prophet represents—supportedby the beast—is twice referenced regarding "abominations." let's read: "i [the apostlejohn] saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast full of names of blasphemy, having sevenheads and ten horns. and the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked withgold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominationsand filthiness of her fornication: and upon her forehead was a name written, mystery, babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth."god not only describes this religious system as abominable, but calls it "the mother of...abominations."its leader is called the "man of sin" in ii thessalonians: "let no man deceive you byany means: for that day shall not come, except

there come a falling away first [a prophecyfulfilled in the late 20th century], and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition...whoopposes and exalts himself above all that is called god, or that is worshipped; so thathe as god sits in the temple of god, showing himself that he is god."verses 9 and 10 explain how this deceiver will sway great numbers to worship him andthe civil leader: "even him, whose coming is after the working of satan with all powerand signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in themthat perish; because they received not the love of the truth..." the allure of miracleswill seduce the masses into supporting and even worshipping the beast. (see revelation13 verses 11 to 14 and 19 verse 20.)

this is clearly the false prophet of revelation16:13, not the beast. but don't be confused. they both are seen as divine. remember, antiochusepiphanes—the civil ruler—as well as the statue representing the babylonish religioussystem in jerusalem—were types of the coming beast and false prophet.(much more about all of this is covered in a variety of other broadcasts. these subjectsare also covered in four extensive free booklets: revelation explained at last!—who or whatis the beast of revelation?—the antichrist - who, what and when! and the mid-east inbible prophecy.) now, what is the motivation behind the settingup of the abomination? psalm 83 reveals why the beast will desolate jerusalem and desecratethe jewish state and religion. now notice:

"come...let us [certain nations acting inalliance] cut them off from being a nation; that the name of israel may be no more inremembrance. for they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate againstyou [this describes an association of nations in the middle east who ally with 10 europeannations under the beast]...who said, let us take to ourselves [note this] the houses ofgod in possession." it is certainly no secret that forces existtoday in the mid-east who want to "cut off" the modern nation of israel—the jews. wealso read from luke that this was a time of (gentile) "wrath" against the "people" of"this land." however, recognize that many western countries within the nation identifiedhere as israel will be included in this planned

destruction.let's focus on the phrase "houses of god." we saw the final powerful religious leaderwill "plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas [mediterranean sea and deadsea] in the glorious holy mountain." comparing this with psalm 83 makes clear they describethe same holy places in jerusalem where the jews' daily sacrifices must already by thenhave been restarted. so then, the religious motive behind the confederationis to wipe out the nations of israel and seize jerusalem's holy places—the "houses of god."just as antiochus entered jerusalem millennia ago, destroyed the city and desecrated thetemple, a final fulfillment of the abomination of desolation is drawing nearer.understand. a great religious power has long

said it wants to proclaim jerusalem an internationalcity. but this seemingly peaceful desire will only be a pretense for taking possession ofthe city's holy sites. this system will declare, "they are safe with us! you can trust us!we will be the guarantor of jerusalem—and its 'three great religions.' and we are preparedto bring armies to ensure it." longing for "peace in our time"—reminiscentof british prime minister neville chamberlain's report upon returning from berlin just beforeworld war ii—this will please and reassure the masses—and the decision makers!now understand. for the daily sacrifices to stop they must first be restarted. there mustcome at least a temporary restoration of these old covenant sacrifices in jerusalem at thetemple mount under the direction of a restored

priesthood. while a temple is not needed, something must be built. two things will occur: (1) a blasphemous idolwill desolate the temple (or a rebuilt altar for sacrifices)—and (2) armies desolatethe city. antiochus did both, putting an idol in zerubbabel's temple and sacrificing a pigon the altar, and destroying the city. he becomes a crucial type for both fulfillments.when jerusalem is surrounded by armies, and the false prophet directs the beast to erectthis statue at the site of the reconstituted daily sacrifices, the abomination will officially"stand in the holy place"! you saw what those faithful to god are to do next.until next time, this is david c. pack saying, "goodbye, friends."
